About

A successful interview allows for the collection of critical information about a person diagnosed with STI/HIV, while providing support, referrals, and answers to questions the person may have. The interview process is an opportunity to assess the person’s medical condition, ensure linkage to care and treatment, gather information for continued monitoring and support, and obtain the names and locating information of people who may have been exposed to facilitate testing and treatment as appropriate.

This learning collaborative will focus on the social and medical history taking process when working with people diagnosed with an STI/HIV, and with people who have been exposed to STI/HIV. Discussion of what questions are pertinent to ask and why, and modeling of sample language for use when people seem hesitant to provide sensitive information will explored.

Training participants could benefit from training in motivational interviewing, and sexual orientation and gender identity, prior to attending this training. Training participants new to the disease intervention role could benefit from attending the STI/HIV Interview Series: Overview of STI/HIV Interviewing, prior to this training.  

Objectives

  • Identify words that relate to a question you will ask when obtaining a person’s social history.
  • Describe the rationale for asking questions during the social history section of an STI/HIV interview.
  • Ask at least five questions during the social history section of the STI/HIV interview.
  • List key words that relate to a question you will ask when obtaining a medical history.
  • Describe the rationale for asking questions during the medical history section of an STI/HIV interview.
  • Define and apply the acronym CHART.
  • Ask at least five questions during the medical history section of the STI/HIV interview.

    Expectations

    • Interactivity is an important part of the event. Please have audio and video capability on your device. We encourage people to communicate verbally or use the chat feature.
    • To engage fully with the learning collaborative (LC) experience, we ask that you stay for the entirety of the LC. Participants who show up later than 15 minutes past start time or otherwise miss more than 15 minutes will be asked to register for another session. 
    • Supervisors, please be aware of staff registrations and allow time for full participation.
